I am sure 7-11 workers and service station workers see these all the time, smokes and hootch are necessities of life for some people.

My wife got a 2000 1 oz platinum coin (face value $100) that same way when she was the office manager of a gas station.

That was exactly my thought. When I work the register i won't except such coins from most people for tobbaco or Alcohol.

I ran a register at a small store in the 70's (high school job). They had a policy we followed. When someone came in and paid for a six pack with a pile of old coins, we accepted them, pulled the tape out of the recorder on the security system, and notified the police. They were usually stolen. Not to say there weren't legitimate folks cashing in a few Mercury dimes.... but someone paying for a case of beer with a pile of Morgans was usually suspicious.

I don't think this happens due to stupidity, I think it happens because person a. is rather annoyed with person b. enough to raid person b.'s cherished items and hock them for spite.

(Looks embarrassed) of course this is just a theory... it never happened to me.. really..

I worked a register in a busy place and those coins come through on a regular basis. I think some people genuinely don't know that they might be more valuable than face value. I didn't - I never picked up any of them when I could have. I would shove em in my cash bag. Even when I started collecting I didn't buy them because I wasn't interested in them - too new for me. I like the silver money.

    Right

Wheat backs and Silver Quarters are nearly extinct from circulation but MORGAN DOLLARS - people just think those are regular dollars....

People, usually elderly, occasionally bring old money into the banks as well. I got some Morgans and Peace dollars from my favorite teller just two months ago.

My son just called from the auction barn that he works at on Saturday nights. There is someone that occasionally brings in misc. older, but basically common junk coins to be auctioned. They had some tonight. My son said they were all going very high tonight (ex: 10 circulated steel cents went for $14.00), so he got the bright idea to see what he had in his pocket. He selects 4 state quarters and an Ocean in view nickel and holds them up. High bid was $2.50. Some people will buy anything (shaking head). I may have to dig out some of my extra cwts and htts.
