We have a (one year old ) tradition in my house where on St. Patrick's Day, my daughters leave out two pennies and a "leprechaun" comes and leaves them two pieces of gold in their place. This year I was planning on doing one 2007 1/10 gold eagle and another similarly priced coin. I was hoping to find an older US coin that sells in that price range but it seems as though the old $2.50 coins sell at a fair premium to spot. Are there any US golds I could find below $100? If not, does anyone have any suggestions on any other gold coins that might fit this bill? I'm already considering the 1/10 gold panda.
No such thing as a cheap gold coin. You will most always pay a premium over spot for bullion coins... Maple Leafs, Pandas, Eagles, whatever you select. Good luck RickieB
Yes, I understand there will be a premium over spot. But with the AGE, that is generally a small premium. With for instance a $1 US gold coin, the premium is gigantic. I'm looking for gold coins that sell at a small premium to spot (and also below $100 ).
Even $1 US golds that were used in jewelry sell for about $90. Silly price, but I guess that the dealers get the money.
You might wanna try world gold coins - some countries do offer 1/20 or 1/25 oz gold, which is definately affordable but really tiny.
You can also try 1/10th Australia Nuggets (Kangaroos). I picked up a 2000 for under $70 myself about a week ago.
http://www.mintproducts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=253 How about some gold coins from Mexico.
That's a pretty neat idea. Almost funny about the penny to gold coin thing, heh. Wish it worked that way (I got lots of pennies!) -and they're probably too young to question why a leprechaun is leaving them gold coins from China or Mexico. They're worldly!
Gold ducats from the Netherlands are a good substitute for modern stuff - they can be found for less than $100 every day and contain 3.5 gr of .986 gold and are 21mm in diameter. A good bit larger than most options
