So last night I spent the night out and went to bed pretty late. However I did keep in mind there was an auction for an Elizabeth I sixpence I was watching that was going cheap. I placed a bid around $25 right before (admittedly way too late) going to sleep. Woke up to a $15 + shipping win on this coin.

A few issues but it does have a full planchet. Elizabeth I hammered coinage was heavily clipped and many pieces do not have a full edge. It seems as if this piece managed to escape the clippers.

The pheon mintmark dates this one to between 1561 and 1565. Although I will take a closer look at the last digit when I get it in hand I will say that the narrow date seems to match this coin of 1562:

Numismatics is a funny hobby, an amazing piece of history like that for $15, but a normal quarter with a die chip that gets a fancy name can cost ten times as much! Thanks for sharing.

    For $15, that's a nice piece.

Love it. Honestly Ive been thinking about start collecting mideval up to 17th c British coinage as the us stuff I like has got so costly lately even stuff I like and before could step up and buy I still can’t touch due to crazy bidiots

Agreed. Hard to imagine one can buy a 500 year old coin for less than so much of the new stuff.
