Can't get much cheaper than face! Like everything else in life...it simply takes hard work and patience.

  7. I used to do that, but I'd get strange looks for going into the mall fountain, for some reason.

That's because you didn't have waders and a fishing rod with you.

Roll searching is the cheapest. After that, I would say estate / local auctions. Just be knowledgeable and don't get suckered into a bidding war.

The best way to get cheap coins is to know everything about everything, then you can spot all die varieties and errors including those that most don't see

No one will share that info. Your best bet is to get seriously educated.

I take it you're in the St Louis area?

Check out George McCurley auctions...he usually has a few items at the end of the coin auction that haven't been bid on - so you might get some pretty sweet deals.

Well, I sorted coins for him this summer. It's not like I can buy them from where I go to school (Salt Lake City)...so why not send buyers his way?

I feel you man. I did similar work for Phil Weiss out here in NYC.

I guess the point I was trying to make is that getting good leads is no excuse for having strong enough knowledge to buy good coins without over-paying. I get nearly all of my coins from eBay, and the best deals are often due to something extremely obscure. I'm talking like a small segment of one side of a coin in a somewhat blurry, far away picture. (I primarily deal in foreign coins though.)
Sure, you can find out where to go to find good stuff for sale. But, you still need to have the knowledge to know what the heck you're looking at.
