Here are 2 photos of s $5 Coronet I sent to NGC, returned with note but no grade. I don't know how I missed it but upon return I did see the crimped bezel marks. They won't grade, even as a details. I have two questions, first are the crimp marks so bad that the coin is considered worse than one (I've seen many) marked details due to deep scratches, and second, does it remove almost all value even though it's a Charlotte? I have a third question, will anybody actually grade the coin, I'd like to know just how good it could have been? Thanks, Steve

I'm very surprised they didn't grade it as ex jewelry it don't look that bad to me the surfaces do look a bit odd on it too tho you can always try pcgs or anacs

The coin has too many issues. There is a point that NGC and PCGS don't wish to holder a coin.

The coin is pretty much worth melt... If you are interested in selling I might go over melt just to be nice... :) And I'm kidding.. it is obviously worth more than melt.

The surfaces don't look right to me. Are you 100% positive that it isn't fake?

The coin is ugly.. really ugly, but NGC would have said if it was a fake.

That may be true, but if they weren't sure one way or the other, I could understand why they might return it with no grade or comment.

How could NGC remove any value if they did nothing to it, if it's the same now as before sending it in??? Also, looking at the two choices in your 'poll', well, look at the two choices in your poll. Why not just come out and ask for offers???

Not necessarily. I think it's a fake myself.

I'm not sold on it being a fake, but the surfaces are pretty grainy. Strange.

I've seen other gold coins that had this kind of surface not sure what caused it but they sure are ugly

It appears to be real in my opinion and gold. It also appears to have been possibly dipped or cleaned is some sort of chemical or acid that attacked and etched the surfaces causing the pitted effect likely by someone cleaning their jewelry and not knowing what they were doing

You said "returned with note but no grade". What did the "note" say?

I was wondering that myself. The way the title of the thread was worded makes it almost sound like saying NGC damaged the coin. @steve1942 let me know if you want to reword the thread title.

The surfaces are weird because it has been used as jewelry and has probably been harshly cleaned several times

I've never owned jewelry or dealt with it before. My question: wouldn't a cleaner like the one used on this coin destroy the value of the jewelry or is that kind of cleaner appropriate for jewelry but not coins?
