hello all. just picked up my new cw mag................front page news, house votes to stop using edge inscriptions on dollar coins. missing motto on coins prompts amendment (i assume they mean the motto not showing on the face or reverse). looks like things may get interesting to say the least. grizz
good news i hope they will put everything back to obverse and reverse. change the rim to just plain. like the sac dollars. addition to that. use one dollar instead of $1.
Oh, boo----more bogus dollars on eBay! Rare!! New Presidential dollars with edge inscriptions on the obverse & reverse! Plain edge coins made it error.
error coin if error coin is really good. then why people have would like to sell them immediately. i don't like it either. i won't buy it or collect it. if someone give it to me or i find one. i will sell it right away to make some money. and use that money to buy more u.s. mint newly release coinage. i don't trust dealers either. just u.s. mint.
I think the really cool error moving forward will be golden dollars with the edge inscriptions on them . I will have to buy a press and start making them to sell on the Bay.
lettter edge look at the foreign coin with letter edge. those were so beautifully done. but our dollar is so terrible. just like scratch on the edge.
I would think the missing mottos they refer to would be the smooth edge error coins. My personal opinion is to keep the edge lettering but put the mint mark back on the obverse.
The article doesn't say, although it does say that it's actually an amendment to a current appropriations bill. Basically the amendment says that no money shall be appropriated to implement 5112(n)(2)(c) USC. Which is what authorizes the rim inscriptions. So the rim inscriptions are still law, the Treasury just can't spend money to imprint them. The Congressman offering the amendment says that he believes this will default everything - the motto is the important part to him - back to the obverse. My reading is that if the rim inscriptions are still law, but unpaid for, then, if this bill passes (it hasn't yet passed the Senate) and is signed into law, the presidential dollars will be without date, mintmark, or motto.
I hope they scrap the whole program to include sacagawea, while they're at it they can bin the 50C too. I mean if its not released for circ then it needs to not be inlcuded in our proof sets, whats to stop them from dropping 2C 3C 20C or even a 75C piece for s&g?
If it was a RELIEF as opposed to INCUSE edge inscription I would be very keen to keep it. But as it is, it is poor quality and I would like it to die.
I think they would have to jump through some pretty big hoops to do away with the motto. People would be sreaming bloody murder.
I don't like the edge inscriptions. They are too small to read and when you an album you can't read them either. I also agree about the '$1'--go back to 'one dollar'!!! davdo.
i believe they were referring to the motto appearing on the obverse or the reverse where one can spot it easier than on the edge. jmho
The history of "In God we trust on US coins... http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.shtml
I think the edge inscriptions have made for numerous variations, errors and ommissions. I say keep the edge inscription but put the year and mint mark on the obverse or reverse. I also think it's quite likely that the US MINT is causing the edge errors on purpose. It certainly stimulated the coin collecting community and brought new collectors on board. The US MINT being the largest coin producer in the world has plenty to gain by causing greater interest in coins in general.
i think the mint, like other working establishments, have some employees who don't really care about doing their jobs right and also management doesn't care enough to do their jobs either. jmho grizz
