OK Mikjo - just for giggles, let's see how ya do with this coin Now there's a couple folks around here who will know what this is, but let's see if Mik can figure it out :kewl: obverse reverse
OK let me take a wild stab in the dark...hehe SALZBURG, ERZBISTUM ARCHBISHOP HIERONYMUS VON COLLOREDO, 1772-1803 http://www.salzburgcoins.at/Landesfuersten/html/L18_colloredo.htm
I wish I could get a english version of that site paper. I can't seem to find a web address to inquire wether or not they can help. I printed it and hopefully one day I will get someone to translate it. I'm a fan of ARCHBISHOP HIERONYMUS VON COLLOREDO era coins and would like to know some history of the man !!
To translate any web page into English, go to http://babelfish.altavista.com/babelfish/tr type or paste the URL for the page you want translated in the Translate a Page box, and click on the correct language pair.
Roy you ARE the man !!!!!! :hail: :hail: Why couldn't I have found this site on my own.... Thanks so much for the tip ... I've been wanting to read this for months.
Welllllllllllll - the person on the coin has been identified - but not the coin itself. And notice - I did say coin
Hieronymus of Colloredo, 1772-1803. Medal 1782, on the 1200th anniversary of the Archdiocese. Engraved by F. Matzenkopf. Bust/temple. Zeller 11; Berne hard/roll 4423. 24,60 g.; 41 mm.It appears that your coin which is dated 1782 is nearly identical to this medal except for the fact that it is dated and probably monetized. The medal has the same date but in Roman numerals and has the engraver's full name (Matzenkopf,F),not just initials, below the bust. This one was auctioned for 189 Euros. That's all I can find for now.Incidently,he was one of Mozart's patrons.
I'm impressed - I didn't know they struck a medal with this design :thumb: But that's not the correct answer But don't feel bad Mik - you're not the only one to have been stumped by this coin. By the way - you didn't think to search Coin Talk - how's come ? You woulda found the answer if ya had OK - you won't find this coin in any book, at least not in a coin book. You can find it in a coin auction catalog though - if you go back far enough. The coin was meant to be struck in gold KM #452 - Fr #887, but this coin is an off metal strike pattern, struck in silver, 22mm 3.5 gm. A couple of years ago a dealer friend of mine contacted me and told me about this coin he had found. He knew I collected ducats, so he figured I would be interested in something like this. He was correct - a coin of such rarity that it's not even found in the books - how could not be correct ? So anyway I bought the coin. Now here's the surprise for you silvereagle This is the coin I bought 2 yrs ago - This is the coin I posted earlier in this thread - That's right, I managed to find a second one :eat:
Cool Doug! By the way,I just noticed that the medal has smooth rims and yours have dentils! Here's the link, you can enlarge the pic a LOT! http://peus-muenzen.de/aukdo/AukDetail.php?id2=2&TaskId=5&ik1=00024&ik2=Auktion_368-369&id1=610198
Doug, I kinda thought your other coin looked nicer than your original pic. Check this auction out. http://www.sixbid.com/home/auctions/lanz/modern/la127/a127.htm Lots nos. 933 -939 might susprise you.
The last lots 938-939 seem to be Doug's exact coin, estimated at 50 Euros in silver and the gold ducat version,1250 Euros. Also looks like the medal was issued with and without dentils. The coin is listed as a silver "abschlag vom dukaten" loosely meaning "beat from"...probably meaning same die.
A gold version For those of you who may remember this thread from a few years ago and those of you new to it ... here is the latest addition to my World Gold Collection. I've been trying to acquire a nice sample of this rare coin for a few years and finally won an auction in Europe (Kuenker). I can't wait to get it in hand! Salzburg 1782 M Ducat Hieronymous von Colleredo Commemorating the 1200th Anniversary of the Bishopric (Probszt 2386 / Fr. 887 / KM# 452) *Rare* >> [/IMG] I also have the silver version of this coin I bought shortly after this original thread by Doug sparked my interest Unfortunately in not as good of quality Doug, I see there is a 2 Ducat version of this coin also ...... I think I'll start looking for one since I have never seen one for sale/sold in my recent research and it may take a while to find one, I think it'll look real nice it my collection
