Another member gave me an idea for this thread, so I dug into my collection of obsolete stocks and ran them through my scanner. These are all banks that I think were likely to have issued either obsolete bank notes or National Bank Notes in their day. Can you match any of these stock certificates with notes from your collection? I'll start -- I have a nice share certificate from the Uncas National Bank in Norwich, CT. That bank also issued obsolete notes in the 1850s and I own a $1 proof, reprinted as part of the American Paper Money Collection issued by the American Bank Note Co. Since this bank existed into the 20th century, I'm fairly certain it put out some National Bank Notes, too. And a few other 19th-century banks: the Bank of Kentucky in Louisville, the National Bank of Catasauqua, PA, and the Mutual Banking Company of Richmond, Virginia. These all seem like good candidates for matching obsolete notes.
This territorial stock from the First National Bank of Bisbee was unissued, but was clearly produced before Arizona statehood in 1912, based on the open date of "190__" Nebraska would have been a very new state in the 1870s when this stock from the First National Bank of Brownville was printed. The U.S. Capitol was a popular vignette on bank stocks. It also appears on certificates from the Andover National Bank and the National Bank of Methuen, both in Massachusetts.
The National-Dime Bank of Shamokin, PA is the only specimen bank stock I own. I know nothing about the bank but I love the name. The calligraphy in the title on this one from the National City Bank of New York is outstanding, harkening back a century earlier than its issue date of 1937. The last three are the First National Bank of Springfield, KY, the Baltimore National Bank, and the Bank of America National Association.
Well I think it's worth a "like". That's a lot of information and photographs you put together. In my case, I only save large and small nationals from cities or towns I lived in. Some of them have hit the piggy bank fairly hard, so I don't expand into others without a reason. Since my kids are going to inherit the collection (if they like it or not), I will add their cities and towns to my list when I have mine done. I'm sure you will get a few match ups before it's over.
Well okay -- let's make it a picture hunt then! I don't own these two Nationals, but I found images that match a couple of the bank stocks. Can anyone else ferret out a match?
I don't have any nationals, but I'm sure I have some unused Bank of America checks to match that one ( used to have an account there ) Love the certificates though.
Bump. Here's another bank stock that might have a National to match it -- First Virginia Banks. At 776,325 shares, this certificate at one time had a real cash value of more than $30 million dollars!
