I have a Chairman Mao Centennial Commemortive Coin Set. This set is in a fan shaped display box and includes five (5) coins in plastic cases. They dipict Chmn Mao at different points during his lifetime. On the underside of the lid among some Chinese characters is the date of his birth and the date of issue. (1893 - 1993). Also, there is something that says "24k", I am assuming that this means plated in 24k gold, but would gladly be convinced otherwise! Anyone have an idea of the value of this set? Thanks, J
It sounds like it's worth nothing at the moment (maybe metal value) unless you can specifically prove that they are indeed coins. Does it have any kind of denomination on the "coins"? Note that in China, there is a dangerous practice to fool collectors as very well know coin designs are actually duplicated but without the denomination. Pictures will be nice if you can provide them. Welcome to cointalk by the way.
to CoinTalk J. Pictures of both sides, and the legends on the box would be a big help, especially as we do have members who can read the legends for you.
Doesn't say it's a coin set. The inscription on the set says that it's the 100th birth anniversary of Mao Zedong, China Shandong (that's his birth place), 24k plated medal. Sorry but it's not going to be worth too much.
Thanks....kind of figured that. No, not a coin....what do you call a round piece of metal without a face value? Pity it isn't gold! Thanks, J
