There were so many cool coins at the Boston show. I bought these two 8-Reals from the Republic of Central America. The dates are 1839 and 1842. These 8 real coins are similar in size to a US silver dollar. These large silver coins have a milled patterned edge intended to prevent traders from shaving silver from the edge.

I also found a nice 2-Real in XF. The 2 Reals are tough to find in nice condition. I’ll take a photo & post it here.

Thanks for letting me share & please post your coins from the Central American Republic.

I already had this 1824. This is the first year that the Republic of Central America issued the 8 Reals. You cannot see the milled/patterned edge in the original NGC holder. I’m going to shoot some more photos now.

Here is a close up depicting the milled/patterned edge on one of the 8 Real coins. You can see it clearly in the new NGC holder. It is interesting to see the details of where the milling begins on the coin’s edge. In some cases, I don’t like the new NGC holders but in the case of this coin, I really like the new holder.

This photo was taken holding the coin in one hand & the camera in the other hand. It surprises me how nice the photo came out. Hurray for the Cannon Powershot SD1300IS.

This is the 2 Real I purchased in Boston. This Honduras coin is from the Tegucigalpa Honduras mint (I had to look-up the spelling on that one).

The NGC opinion is XF45. This grade might be open to a lot of debate but you really need to have the coin in hand to appreciate that it is “as made” back in 1833. As usual, my photos can’t do justice to the coin. Everything you see in the photo I believe courtesy of the Tegucigalpa mint. At first the coin looked scraped & looked like it had a damaged rim. After more careful inspection, I believe that these are all original planchet & strike characteristics. IMO it is just a good honest XF45.
