I am trying to put a collection of obsoletes together, from my local county, here in Maryland. I just missed this Cecilton, MD note on ebay. I have never seen one from this town before and neither has several of our local historians that have numismatic knowledge. Has anyone ever seen one like this and or similar? I have already google searched to no avail. Thanks
Here's one I found: http://www.pennypinchercoins.com/18...erchants-bank-of-cecil-county-elton-maryland/
Whoops, I guess you were only looking for Cecilton. Email Don Kelly, he might have some info. Here is a link I found interesting: https://cecilcounty.wordpress.com/2...ty-port-deposit-and-elkton-issue-paper-money/ If Q. David Bower's book on Maryland obsoletes is available, get it. I think he's at volume 5 now, but hasn't covered MD yet.
Six and 1/4 cents -- that's a really unusual denomination. I suspect it may have been the interest payment on some type of bond.
Hi Mitch, The link is to an article written by one of our local historians that I mentioned, who is also helping me look for the illusive Cecilton Notes. Thanks
I think that the 6 and 1/4 cents was not that uncommon, because a lot of people were still thinking in terms of "pieces of eight". A quarter dollar was two bits (12 and 1/2 cents per bit) of a Spanish silver dollar.
