This is a first-of-kind post for me. :-/ Please share your opinions about this coin? I'd be greatly appreciative! The type is outside my wheelhouse of handling experience, but I've searched online enough to find that the type is: Tacitus, billon tetradrachm, first regnal year, Alexandria mint, Emmett 3971, Dattari 5515. The diameter and weight of this coin are quite close to what they should be: 7.82 grams; 19.2 mm. The die axis is 12h.
The sharp, smooth edges are not typical for this period. Alexandrian tets for the late 3rd century have rough and ragged edges, as the flans were probably sand cast. I have attached some of mine from the same period showing the edges.
Thanks @Victor_Clark and @Bing ! ! ! And yes, there is surely a stark difference in the edges/rims. Greatly appreciate the nice picture for comparison!
I would agree with @Victor_Clark on the edges as that has been my experience as well. The style of your piece looks off as well. The coin should look like this (not my coin). Even on this specimen, the rough edges of the coin are clear.
@romismatist That's very helpful (and greatly appreciated) additional information! Thanks also @Collecting Nut
