I parted with a Caracalla Denarius a couple of weeks ago to a fellow forum member and felt a pang of regret. So I went looking for a replacement and found this coin. This coin arrived in today's mail and it is very pleasing in-hand.

    Caracalla AR Denarius
OBV: ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate head right
REV: VOTA SVSCEPTA X, Caracalla veiled, standing left, sacrificing out of patera over tripod altar
    Struck at Rome, 206-210 AD
    3.4g, 18mm
    RIC 179
    Caracalla 7 OBV.jpg Caracalla 7 REV.jpg

The reverse of the coin depicts Caracalla sacrificing and taking his solemn vows on his tenth anniversary of his stewardship.

    Short History of Caracalla

Caracalla, born M. Aurelius Antoninus in AD 188 in Lugdunum, was the elder son of Septimius Severus and Julia Domna. At the age of eight, he was given the rank of Caesar and two years later, was created Augustus. Upon the death of Severus in AD 211, Caracalla reigned jointly with his brother, Geta, as Severus had arranged. Then in December 211 at a reconciliation meeting arranged by their mother Julia, Caracalla had Geta assassinated by members of the Praetorian Guard loyal to himself, Geta dying in his mother's arms. Caracalla then persecuted and executed most of Geta's supporters and ordered a damnatio memoriae pronounced by the Senate against his brother's memory. His reign was marked by extravagance and cruelty and Caracalla was finally murdered by the orders of Macrinus, the praetorian prefect on April 8th, AD 217. He was considered to be a real monster by all accounts.

It's a lovely denarius. So much for trading coins, huh? Gotta replace the missing pieces.

Isn't that awful? I own several Caracalla coins, but I couldn't get over parting with one. I'm like an addict, or more precisely like a hoarder. I just can't stand giving up "my precious".

I know the feeling. I put a few coins up on eBay, figuring I'd upgrade them later, but then I cancelled the auctions.

...and there are nice provincial issues of Caracalla, too. The last includes Geta which must have really upset Caracalla considering their no-love-lost relationship.
