Thursday noon I was a bit down as I got stomped on a coin I had wanted at auction. Then this arrived late afternoon via post and I had forgotten all about my earlier loss and felt even better once I had released my aggression Caracalla (198-217), AR Denarius. Rome mint, AD 214. Freeeeeeeedom! Nothing like a little crack to lift your spirits, huh? I had a big ol' crack party one night last year Here's one of the liberated coins: ROMAN REPUBLIC, M. Piso M.f. Frugi 58 BCE (redated from Crawford's 61 BCE by Hersh and Walker, 1984) AR denarius, 20 mm, 3.94 gm Obv: terminal bust of Mercury right, wearing winged diadem; calix below chin; to left, star above wreath; dotted border Rev: M·PISO·M·F / FRVGI above secespita (sacrificial knife) and patera; all within laurel wreath Ref: Crawford 418/2b; Sydenham 825; Calpurnia 23 formerly in an NGC slab Seems like a good thread to show (again) my Crack 'Em Out shirt. I designed the fabric, had it printed to jersey, and sewed up a nice blouse to wear to CICF 2016, where I wore the garment and pointedly showed it to David Michaels of Heritage Closeup of the fabric repeat:
I committed the ultimate of sins, I cracked a US coin out of a slab.... because it had to be done. 1861 $20 AU55 ANACS. The base of the first 1 in the date is repunched south. This apricot-gold double eagle is nicely struck and has only a single mentionable mark, seen on Liberty's jaw. Careful rotation beneath a lens reveals wispy hairlines, but luster illuminates design elements. The 1861 double eagle was the initial Civil War issue and a workhorse date with 2.9 million business strikes minted. Most saw considerable circulation but some, such as this coin, show only light wear. High grade examples of any date are rarities. The great size and weight of these coins caused most pieces to suffer numerous contact marks and abrasions. haha! while it doesn't bother me to have coins entombed, i do like this TIF. maybe you can make me a kerchief of it
Excellent TIF!!! I love your liberated M. Piso M.f. Frugi and that Cracked Slab Fabric is Outstanding! I think not a blouse for me but something like this might be ok:
I have a couple hundred slabbed US coins and don't think I have the guts to break them out, but seem to have no qualms whatsoever in freeing the ancients. I congratulate you on sinning with that 1861 Double Eagle and I'm sure hefting unplasticized gold feels joyous! Your Caracalla Tet is sweet!!
Hi Doug, do you agree with the generally modern recognition that the reverse of my Caracalla is GENIO SENATVS? RIC states "Emperor in togate" but I've described as most are nowadays as "Genius of the Senate".
There are often cases where the emperor appears to replave a deity/god/personification on coins where we see emperor as ...... In these cases this is implied by the addition of a laurel wreath. In this case there is no sign of a laurel wreath and I cannot see any such justification.
