Capped Die or something else?

What caused this error? At first I thought it was a capped die, but the wear on the reverse suggested that the coin was actually concave on the obverse and convex on the reverse. I confirmed that it is.

First, welcome to the neighborhood @Swan !

The hardest part of searching for some anomaly that you have never seen before is using a word or group of words to describe the anomaly.

In this case, the image that you posted (or one like it) is one that has appeared many, many times with the same question on our forums. Your coin has been "spooned". It is a slow process of using the bottom of a spoon to tap the edge of a coin while slowly rotating it.

    It's considered PMD. (post-mint damage)

    Thanks Chris.

Haha. I feel like that guy on Antiques Roadshow that just found out his Ming Dynasty vase came from Pier One.

You shouldn't feel that way. Numismatics can be a complicated hobby to learn, and there is nothing wrong with asking questions. Remember, there is no stupid question, just stupid answers.
