Here is a picture of a capped bust quarter I've been considering for my type set, so I'm looking for opinions. Does it look to have an old cleaning? What would you grade?

XF-40 details cleaned, net VF-30 ....and that is a beautiful photo.

From the photos, I'd say it looks XF and has been cleaned (as most have been). Depending on what the rest of your type set looks like, the offering price of this CB25c, and your budget... I would think this is great example for a type set.

I would agree with XF, but if there is a cleaning its an old one. I also think it'd be a great pickup for a type set. They're just hard to come by.

By the way, this is a B-1 R1 marriage and probably the easiest to find in all grades in the whole CB25c series. Your example is a late die stage. I will post my two examples below to show the different stages in the obverse die. I believe there are two cracks that form independently at S1 and S13 then proceeds to meet at the bust...I could be wrong...it's just a theory? I haven't really seen enough (although quite common) higher grade LDS examples to confirm or deny it. It could also be it is singular crack and that less pressure is exerted on the bust area during striking that makes the crack difficult to see?....No die bulges though?

Here is my near terminal example of the B-1 marriage.

Here is my example of the earlier die stage of the B-1 (PCGS AU58)

  7. This coin, even though it has been cleaned, is a beaut. I would go for it if it weren't too expensive. Pretty good representation of a capped bust quarter IMO.

nice coins cappedbustdime!! I agree that the coin is nice looking, but probably isn't worth it if cleaned. The asking price is $330. I have a hard time finding nice capped quarters.

Also forgot to add to check out the "shield" clash marks below/on Miss Liberty's ear. I don't have a reference handy and I don't recall whether or not this obv. die being shared with any other obverse so, I assume it occurred fairly early.

I agree. I am confident, with a bit of effort, you could find an unmolested example of a reduced size CB25c in the same condition (slabbed or raw) for about the same price.

Rich Uhrich, Dick Osburn, JJ Teaparty, and NFC coin are usually good places to look for reduced size CB25c in this grade/price range.

That's not really a bad quarter, but if I were the OP, I would try and find a more original example as the coin pictured in this thread has been cleaned (IMO). Respectfully...Mike

    p.s. xf 40 details, cleaned/retoned, net VF 20

  13. Personally, 330 would be a bit high for me. Like the others have said, at that price you can find an untampered example of that coin. Just be patient and you'll find what you want :)
