I love bust halfs(capped 1807-39)and can not find my Overton variations so i bring it to the community! Yeoman mentions edge variation,"raised segment lines left,Lines right,Adopted/1830-36 my question? Is this an variation or error there is the star on other side but between OR and A are the variations...On mine it is letters&indents NOT "raised" segments BUT doe's look like segments,Or am i just reaching?...Opinions please! THANKS for LOOKING!!!
I really can't tell with those pics . I've never seen so much space between the letters as usually the letters start to look like little holes , not plane rims . Unless the milling machine strip was worn terribly .
Thank you for your input!!! I myself have not seen this either,I will try today to get better pics!!!
Not milling machine. Those are like the coins that we have today, and from 1836 on. These are from a Castaing machine. And this is nothing out of the ordinary
Edge lettering on Busties was subject to so many possible mistakes that virtually none of those mistakes carries much for added value or interest. A very few ended up with no edge lettering at all; those are pretty pricey coins.
But they put the lettering on when milling the coin round , at least that's in from mine to mint . I was going to put castgating machine but didn't thing that was the correct spelling so I opened up my copy of Mine to Mint . Page 303 . I know castaining is more correct and I'm fairly sure it's in that book but I can't find it .
