I'll actually have the real answer tomorrow, but I wanted to see what you guys think of this. I am working on a US type set in higher grades, EF and better, and try to find a deal, like any of us. I happened upon this listing on eBay, and I can't wrap my head around why anybody who knows anything about coins, would ever sell this piece in this manner. It's a "sideshow attraction" in a circus of "unimpressive numismatic crapola". So .... why on earth would this coin be sold this way? The easy answer is that there's something wrong with it ... but even with problems, I would have showcased the dime in a seperate listing, rather than in a "lot" in the "collections and lots" category...... What will I find? Riddled with hairlines? Chinese fake? ....and....Why is this not encapsulated? Note: If counterfeit, Paypal has my back, so it's not a real big gamble. This could happen....if somebody inherits material they know nothing about, but this seller apparently has been a buyer of numismatic material as well, so that's apparently not the case. He is aware of 3rd party grading ,at least as it applies to currency, since his only other listing is a certified star note. The other reason to list it this way, is that you "don't want the right buyer to see it" ... ummmm, that doesn't sound quite right. If you were to stagger a guess, and purely for entertainment value, what do you think I will find tomorrow when fedex delivers my lot of uninspiring nickels? Well, I am pretty sure the seller would know what that dime is and why it should be separate. If you look at all his sales, they are for coins. So I would be wary. Please keep us posted! I had a similar purchase like this last year, and it turned out it was a very good thing. So it does happen. I'm rooting for you!
I appreciate that. Let's say I'm "cautiously optomistic" ... and hoping to not be let down too hard. You know what they say about something that's "too good to be true"? I'll update the thread tomorrow at some point. Nightowl
It's here .....and it's sweet The "lot" arrived and I am pretty pleased with my purchase. Now to sell off the "chaff". Nightowl
Wow! Score! (Assuming it's real.) Very odd to have a coin worth 500 to 1000 in a batch of junk. Nice move though. Almost hard to believe. Would love to have that one for my US type set.
The weight and diameter are correct, so I've no misgivings about the coin's originality. The seller is an attorney ... for what that's worth. Now I need to find a quarter to match (in terms of grade). I have the half dollar and half dime, and now the dime. There are 2 different diameters of capped bust dimes, and now I'm wondering about the size of the opening in the Dansco....though this coin may not go into that album and be subjected to scratches from the acetate slide. Nightowl
My bust half dime is very loose in my Dansco 7070. I know some people actually 'wedge' it in with little pieces of paper around the coin. I am not one of those people.
My capped bust half is slabbed AU-55 and it's not going into the album. The half dime is still in a staple type 2x2 holder, while this one is in a snaptite 2x2 from capital plastics. It's the penny size one, and it's a wee bit sloppy, but adequate for now. I checked out Byron Reed's collection, and I guess this is a JR-2 from what I can gather. The shield is quite distinctive, and compares favorably with that variety. My "no rays" shield nickel is an 1880 ... raw, which I bought a year or more ago. That one's not in the album either. I need some early copper, and a few seated coins to finish it up. Nightowl
I mispoke, I did mean my Bust dime. The US type set is my favorite album. I am only missing a few. Here it is if you would like to see it. http://www.thecoinnection.com/member/MemberCoinShelf.html?memberAlbum=107
Nice set ... A lot like the one I'm putting together. The early copper that I need will be spendy, and if I have to pull any pumches, it will likely be there. I have a real fondness for the Barber material, so once I get a quarter...I'll have all of those in nice AU. Here's my shield nickel "with rays" .... It's on it's way from Portugal as we speak. I paid a whopping $9.43 delivered for the coin. It's not the best, but I'm betting that when I upgrade that slection, I can make a few bucks on this one. I don't know what's going on by the date ... but at "under 10 dollars" ... I can live with it for now. One other thought ... I could have opened the bidding on the lot of nickels (with the capped bust dime) at just 35 dollars, though there was a reserve on it. I have seen ... way too many times ... a listing eclipse by a sustantial margin ... the "buy it now" price. I opted to pay the piper and take a chance. I'm glad I did. Nightowl
