This is supposed to be an Ancient Roman coin. But it has very little markings to Distinguish just what it is. Is this typical of Ancient coins ?
Looks to be a coin... Going out on a limb here (not sure about this), but I think it is a later Roman Bronze... I think I see a wreath with atleast 1 x in it... Possibly a votive issue. This isn't typical of Ancient coins from what I've seen. Most ancients that come up for sale have alot more detail then that one, as people normally don't sell what are known as culls. From my collection, a $20 coin with a bit more details than a typical ancient coin:
Alexander III, the Great Macedonian Kingdom Alexander III the Great AE13 c.323-315 BC Cyprus-Salamis Facing gorgon at center of ornamented Macedonian shield (no legend) Macedonian helmet B | A Caduceus below 13mm Price 3158; Müller --
It's typical of extremely worn ancient coins, but ancient coins come in very high grades as well. There isn't enough detail there for me to even guess an empire or era.
Agree. I would also point out to Mojavedave that you should look through some of the threads where you can see some very fine examples of Ancient coins.
My favorite coin: A very fine example of a very old coin (~2400 years old, probably the Best of the Type):
Siculo-Punic AE Horse Galloping Carthage Siculo-Punic Mint 370-325BC Wreathed head of Tanit left Horse galloping right 17mm, 5.5 grams gVF Sassari 56-136, Holleman Munten List 106
