I could not read the name of this Roman Emperor on obverse of the coin. The first letters seems hidden due to condition or possible deterioration. Could you please assist me to find out. The reverse looks also interesting. Thanks.. Charles Cant O.jpg Cant R.jpg

Perhaps someone (like Bing) could describe (link by link) how to look-up this coin on Wildwinds using the very complete reverse legend?

I'm going to go stumble through it myself right now. There will probably be tons of replies here before I get back to this thread.

First off, I believe this is a Theodosius I based mostly on the length of the obverse legend and the last few letters in the name included in the legend. But to be honest, it could also be Valentinian II or perhaps a Arcadius. I'm just not 100 percent.

Taking a look on wildwinds under Theooodosis I and Antioch mint (ANTDelta) this coin is not there specifically. But, if you look at the web site Helvetica's Help page and download the Concordia AVGGG listing, you will find that the RIC number for this coin is RIC IX Antioch 47c. Then, if you would like, go back to wildwinds and you will find RIC IX Antioch 47. And, even though it uses a different workshop (B in this case), it is still listed as RIC IX Antioch 47. Thus, I think your coin will be attributed as:

    Antioch IX RIC 47c

Theodosius AE3. 378-383 AD. D N THEODOSIVS P F AVG, pearl diademed, draped & cuirassed bust right / CONCORDIA AVGGG, Constantinopolis, helmeted, seated facing, head right, on throne, holding partly seen spear & globe; right leg bare; left foot on prow left, theta phi over K across fields, ANTD in ex.
