Canadian Penny, oddly shaped

I recently came across a 1996 Canadian penny, mistaken as a US penny as happens quite often.
The thing that interests me, though, is that it is not round, it is a near-perfect dodecagon (12 sides, all rounded off in this case). Is this due to someone filing it (this doesn't appear to be the case, because the inside of the rim is similarly shaped), a mis-stamp, or is it normal? If needed, I can take a picture of it.
