After my grandfather died a little bit ago, I received a small bank bag half-filled with pennies - many of them old canadian pennies. Still being a kid, I have never seen a male figure on the canadian coins, so guess how excited I was! Anyways, none of them are more than OK condition (worn but still legible) I'll post some pictures of a couple of the good-conditioned ones. Here are the years I got: (years typed twice+ are ones I have more than one of) 1920 1921 1929 1929 1930 1932 1932 1932 1932 1932 1932 1933 1937 1938 1938 1938 1940 1940 1940 1940 1941 1941 1941 1941 1941 1941 1941 1942 1942 1942 1942 1942 1942 1942 1943 1943 1943 1943 1944 1944 1944 1945 1945 1945 1945 1945 1945 1945 1945 1946 1947 1947 1949 1950 1950 1951 1951 1951 1952 1953 1963 1980 1985 I have a red book, but obviously for US coins, and have no idea on Canadian coin values. Does anyone know what any of them might be worth according to their year?
Here's a few of them, sorry for my poor scanner. Also, I have a quick question: Why does cleaning/dipping your coins reduce its value?
Post a picture of the 1930. It is the most valuable of the lot. There is also a variety of 1949 that is worth a lot but it is pretty rare. Bill
You have the beginnings of a "VERY GOOD/FINE" Canadian Small Cent collection. Unfortunately almost none of the key dates in the series are on your list. The "semi-key" 1930 is an exception - the mintage number is 2,538,613, but it's not that expensive a coin. For about $100 you could complete the set and have it in a nice album. NOTE: there are 2 1947's. One has a maple leaf and one does not.
Cleaning a coin just doesn't take off dirt...it takes part of your coin with it...it might leave hairlines all over the face of your coin...it might leave it looking brassing and not copper... Cleaning is bad 100%....there are times when a coin has PVC or such that it MUST be cleaned....but that is the ONLY time I would ever suggest it. Speedy
I'll find the 1930 and post a pic. It'll take a little bit to find it, they aren't organized. My scanner isn't that great so I can't get bigger pictures w/o having them pixalate. (sp) I have the coins in coin tubes I got from walmart. D) That's where I got the red book too, and some coin folders - all for $10!!
There is definitely a lot of years to post about the values. Try to get a hold of a copy of the Charlton Standard Catalogue of Canadian Coins. It should be available from libraries or you could invest in one if you are beginning to take interest in Canadian coins.
Canadian 1c. coins. Bill, how rare is the 1930 1c. coin? I didn't know that 1949 is a scarce date.I always thought that the 1948 was, given the fact that the 1947 Maple Leaf 1c. was struck in 1948,as were the other Maple Leaf coins. Aidan.
The 1949 variety where the A in the word Gratia on the obverse points to the rim denticle rather than between them is worth from $24.00 in VG to $90.00 in AU. Bill
