hello, i was wonder if any one could tell me how valuable a 1959 and 1951 canadian 1 cent penny is. Also what does ICCS Certified MS-65 mean.
Not very valuable, sorry to say. This coin is only more valuable then face when it is mint state. According to Charlton "Canadian Coins" it ranges from $1 in MS-60 Brown to $45 in MS-65 Red which is as close to perfect as you can get. (all prices in Canadian dollars)
Here is my understanding of how the grading designation works,I'm sure other more knowledgable members can expand on it. Coins are graded with numbers from 1 to 70 with several designations within that being used most frequently. These are: good-4,very good-8,fine-12,very fine-20,extra fine-40,about uncirculated-50 and mint state from 60 to 70. Most price guides don't show values for coins above MS-65. ICCS, International Coin Certification Service,is a Canadian third party grading service considered to be the authority for Canadian coins. At major Canadian coin auctions ICCS graded coins will usually bring significantly higher prices than coins in the same grade from other TPG's. Prices from the trends section of Canadian Coin News, the most up to date and most often quoted guide for Canadian coins are: 1959 1¢- MS-65 $75.00,1951 1¢-MS-65 $300.00 Bill
