Hey guys, can anyone point me to a fairly accurate web reference for the values of Canadian coins? I suppose Ebay would be the worst place? Thanks
Just a general reference site for circulation only coins, so nothing about the crazy amount of silver, gold and proof sets that the Mint has released in the last 10 years. I'm interested in finding out values of coins from 1858-2000 (End date can vary). I recently bought a collection of pennies from 1858-Present for $60 (+ 17 50 cent pieces) so I wanted to find out their value. I collect US coins so I don't know much about my own, Canadia, currency.
J&M's site has the majority of prices but keep in mind that these are retail (selling) prices from a dealer. If you were to sell to a dealer the price would be lower. https://www.jandm.com/script/getcatalog.asp?CID=3
How much, as an estimate, in general and across all denominations would you have to take off (in % terms) if you were to sell to a dealer? Would it be in the 20-30%?
Also I cant seem to find any information pertaining the 1973 $1 bill. I mean I know there are a few varieties but I can't find what these varieties actually are and what to look for. Maybe someone can help me with that as well, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks
As for prices, maybe one of the members who is a dealer could help you out with you query. From experience, I would say it would depend on the marketplace as to how much of a demand there is for a particular item or how many the individual dealer has of that item that would determine how much you could get for it. The 1973 dollar bill is very common even in UNC. condition because it was the last issued one dollar bank note (June 3, 1974 to June 30, 1989) and everybody and their grandmother kept them. However, there are scarce varieties of the 1973 issue which can command high prices. I would suggest picking up a copy of the "Canadian Government Paper Money" catalog by Charlton Press and a copy of "Canadian Coins" also by Charlton.
I think I figured out the varietes, which I guess deal with the two types of signatures and a few types of the serial number that start or contain certain characters. I have a few other questions, but i feel that I should just search for them as they would be asked by many people. Thank you for your help though. P.s Is the Charlton guide for coins worth it? As in how accurate would it be in terms of what dealers would pay for a coin from a collector?
It'll give you an approximate price but as I stated earlier, it's the marketplace that creates the demand so prices my vary. I check ebay to get an average range. Price guides are written a year in advance so thing may change during that time. Some dealers use things like monthly newsletters for pricing. Trends, Canadian Coin news etc.. The market for coins and currency fluctuates continuously. What might be hot one month or one year might not be hot the next.
With prudent shopping, you can pick up coins for 50-70% of the retail prices in Charlton, Haxby or the Trends section of Canadian Coin News. You could sell to a dealer for 40-50% of book prices for collectible stuff and about 30% for common, hard-to-sell stuff. A copy of Charlton would be cheap from Brooklyn Gallery and you'll more than make up the cost for it because this year's (2011, 65th edition) has the variety section for Vicky large cents in the back this year (every year a different denomination or series). Find one neat variety in your cent hoard and pocket another $50-200.
Great! Thanks for the help guys, got both of those bookmarked but also found this one: http://www.pcfleet.com/Coinclub/Canada/Can_5cents_1.htm
