Can you tell if these are real by the photos and does anyone know what the value of these items would normally sell for? Thanks to all for any information you can provide. Dillan
I can not tell from the photos and no longer deal with these types due to how common they are and the high number of fakes. This article will explain how many were dumped into the market and fooled many dealers.
I would have said I did not like the ragged flan until I did a quick search for the coin. There are several like yours, ie ragged flans. Unless you like ragged ones, I would look further. You can go to https://www.acsearch.info and search for Thrace Drachm Medusa Anchor I found 56 examples I think there are plenty of these to be had for $100 +/- a bit. You pay a bit more for excellent examples. A description of the bottom coin: THRACE, Apollonia Pontika. Late 5th-4th centuries BC. AR Drachm Obv - Facing head of Medusa Rev - Anchor; A to left, crayfish to right. SNG BM Black Sea 160-1; SNG Copenhagen 457. These are small coins - 13 to 15 mm dia and less than 2.5 to 3.5 grams
I appreciate all the information , and direction given to me by the other members with much more experience then I have. I have started to collect ancients , and I am very thankful to the members of cointalk for their indepth knowledge in this very interesting area of coin collecting. My first purchases were 300 uncleaned coins I picked up in an auction, and I am pleasantly surprised so far with the coins I have found and the condition. I have been working on cleaning these in distilled water , although a slow process , but happy with the results. In a few weeks after I get further on with my cleaning , I will post a number of the coins which I feel has made the purchase worth my time. I started reading cointalk about a year prior to buying any ancients but the members on here made it so interesting that I had to start. I caught the ancient coin bug , and happy I did. I thank everyone for all the jnformation that I get to read about this type of collecting , Learning about the coins and especially the history aspect is fantastic to learn about . My new hobby has put a spark back into my collecting . I used to sell coins on eBay and sold mostly newer items , and older Canadian silver coins and American type coins. I no longer sell anymore for a number of reasons , and the biggest reason is that I wanted to keep the really old ones and special ones for myself . So now I am strictly a collector and having fun thanks to the great bunch on Cointalk. I am happy to say after 3 years on eBay I only had 1 negative comment and 1 neutral. I used to sell under the name lambarcl. A funny name but it started out as my buyer site before turning it into a selling venture for several years. I just like to say that I am happy to be on here , and will continue asking for help every now and again knowing that this is a trusting, fun , and pleasant venue to become part of. I will contribute as much as possible when I may be able to help someone . It nice to be part of a positive informative group of good people . Thanks everyone!! Dillan
Wow. Thank you for that link, it was beyond informative. It's a bummer that this type has been hit so hard with forgeries. I really like these coins, and was looking forward to getting one. I'll have to be much more careful.
