whats wrong with this picture? http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11977&item=8315380352&rd=1 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=11977&item=8315119244&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW hopefully the low prices stay low because people just want fillers. i tried to use Ebay messaging to let these people know these were fakes but it said service down.
if you look at the rim on the second one, its all screwed up. Was that normal on those anyways? (I know that its fake, but im just wondering)
The obvious thing is that the reverse motto (In God We Trust) wasn't added until 1866, meaning these are poor attempts to fool anyone but the most novice collector. Also, the thickness of the rims (especially on the second coin) is a dead giveaway that they are fake.
CHINESE FAKES!!!!!! They had a 1906 SILVER EAGLE (YES!!!! 1906!!!!) on ebay a couple weeks ago. Last Week they had a 1799-S Trade Dollar YES!!!1799!!! The Chinese Scammers don`t have a clue, but they sell to people that don`t have a clue either. Once you get used to looking at them, it takes about 1/2 second to tell these fakes.
good call I wonder how many bidders missed that. If you spot any more post them. Even the way the whole page is written up in an odd way should be a flag.
I've done that once or twice. Is there anything in Ebay's rules to prohibit warning someone that they're about to be taken?
Yea, actually, it's called "auction interference". Naturally, you and others here are doing it with good intentions, though.
i waited untill he won to tell him, also this item was not what it was described as. a fake coin is NOT a US <insert date/denomination> therefore the winning bidder ( im no legal expert) shouldnt be required to pay for it. i think the better business bureau and maybe the FBI would be interested in fake money? if ebay wants to ban me for being a good sumaritan then i dont want to buy things with thier site. on another note, they are supposed to have a group of people who's job it is to spot fakes. doesnt seem i broke any rule......
I'm tired of seeing comments from ebay sellers, such as 'I don't know anything about coins'... yeah, you just happen to come across an ultra rare coin, paying pennies on the dollar, and you had no idea it was fake... after all, you warned people 'I don't know anything about coins'... ...that should make you sleep better at night, I'm sure.
lol im still fairly new to coins(3months collecting), i would love to have the knowledge but atm i don't (but am working on it!). i did report the one coin that i knew was bad. maybe down the road i will just going by that age old saying "do unto others as you would have them do unto you" cause i would really appreciate people warning me before i got burned.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8314427598&sspagename=ADME:L:RTQ:US:1 take this guy for instance... a real coin like that - an 8 escudos from the Santiago mint in Chile, would be gold, right off the bat. Then he says 'I don't know nuttin about dis here coin - but who knows? it could be ultra rare...' yeah. and some pigs fly. So I email the guy, with a link to a photo of how a real coin should look, let alone the fact that this piece is not gold, it doesn't even look nearly correct... but according to all the information I gave him - he tells people 'I have a conflicting theory...'
They don`t have "spotters" on Ebay, no matter what they implied on the fluff piece on CNBC last night. These auctions are reported over and over by a small cadre of dedicated individuals that post in the Coins and Paper Money Board on eBay. http://forums.ebay.com/db1/thread.jspa?threadID=200117604&tstart=40&mod=1119839899761
Actually the organization for checking into fake money is the Secret Service. They are responsible for not only the President safety but also for Fake Money investigations and are also in charge of rounding up moonshiners.
good to know, i remembered someone saying something about the FBI and counterfeit money one time. if anyone spots fake coins on Ebay, or any other site, could you add links to this post please? it will help us all(esp us newbies) get a better feel for fakes which is never a bad thing.
Check my post on eBay fakes in U.S. Coin Forum. I reported a Chinese seller offering 1805, 1806, and 1807 U.S. silver dollars, and the rest of his stuff looked too good(price) to be true. eBay shut him down a couple hours after I reported him.
