It was given to me as a kid, I stashed it away, and just found it again. I always thought it was an old Canadian quarter, but it's from 1849, and I don't think Can 25's go back that far. I can try to take a pic later this weekend, but perhaps if I describe the front someone can tell me. On the obverse: along the rim on the left, "Willem II Koning" on the right side is say DER NED.G.H.V.L. And a portrait (presumably of Willem II). On the reverse is "25 Cents 1949" surrounded by a wreath (kinda like the back of an American Indian Head Cent) It's in average circulated condition . . . is it worth anything?
Right, the king depicted is Willem II (1840-49), and your 25 cents coin is a silver piece (Ag 640). It was issued in 1848 and '49 only (the former in two varieties). Mintage about 6.1 million for the 1849 piece. The inscription around his portrait means Willem II · Koning der Nederlanden · Groot Hertog van Luxemburg which would be "King of the Netherlands, Grand Duke of Luxembourg". The wreath on the other side is two oak twigs. The value is about €10 in fine ... Christian
