Ancient Coins are really not my specialty and I'm having a bit of trouble deciphering what it says. You all on this forum know a lot more than I do, so if someone would be so kind, could you ID this coin?
it's Constantine I and the reverse is SOLI INVICTO COMITI from Rome, struck in A.D. 315 Constantine I A.D. 315 IMP CONSTANTINVS P F AVG; laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right. SOLI INVICTO COMITI; Sol rad., raising r. hand, globe in l.; stg. l., chlamys across l. shoulder, left field S, right field F. In ex. RS RIC VII Rome 33
Thank you very much David@PCC and Victor_Clark! Would you happen to know the denomination? I can specify the diameter if needed.
we don't know for sure what the Romans called these coins; but they are often referred to as follis (singular) and folles (plural)
Alright, thank you very much! For now and probably for a long time, being a more modern coin collector, I have one other coin to identify. It's quite faded.
On the 2nd coin if you could post a larger photo (close up) it might be easier to identify. All I can tell is that it might be a follis or it might be an antoninianus.
the second coin does not appear to be ancient. It seems I can even see numbers...perhaps a date - edit: no, not a date.
I'm sorry, my camera's focus is out of whack, so the best I can do are phone camera photos. Would this do?
Yes, it appears to be Arabic script to me on the shot on the left and something less clear on the shot on the right. I'm not expert in Arab coins but I hope someone comes along who is so it can be attributed.
Yeah, that's what I think to. I'll scour the internet on my end for Arabic coins, hope I don't run into a dead end!
The first thing it suggested to me was not Arabic, but the sort of Brahmi script that you see on coins of the western satraps. And on side 2 towards 6-o'clock, is that a three arched hill? So Indian is a possibility. Maybe @Ancientnoob can help.
Indian is a strong possibility - but I dont think it is ancient - maybe one of the early modern pieces.
Well thank you both, but it's quite hard to identify/find a similar design for now. It seems to be made out of copper and i've been trying to eliminate a few of the 58 princely states.
