Attached are several photos of a 1888 p Morgan silver dollar.
On the reverse are two minor die breaks at 12 & 6 these seem common on these coins, but do they have a vam #
On the obverse the upper eye lid has what I think of as a stinger on the end of it but does this count as a vam and does it have a # ?
Same question for the upper lip ?
And the date 1888 has a clear and visible ghost date below the raised date is this a vam ?
On the reverse at AMERICA there is clear doubling at the bottom of the letters the lower serifs on the A are by far the easiest to see but is this machine doubling ? A worn die that caused this doubling or did this coin just slip in the collar and thus this doubling and the other doubling ?
And lastly is this coin set deeper than others same minting same coins ?
If there is a good place to find reference on the known vams on these Morgans please share.
Simply stated Vams are really just cataloged varieties and errors on Morgans is this correct ?

That's pretty much sums it up. As for a reference, try here - http://www.vamworld.com/

Die cracks are very common on Morgan dollars since 130+ tons of pressure was needed to strike them. It is rare that a VAM is assigned for most cracks. One of the most well-known exceptions to this is the 1888-O "Scarface".

Thank you for the site reference to VamWorld. After hours of reading this BIG smile just won't leave my face.
]And Chris thank you for the insights on cracks & the tonnage pressures. Would you care to venture if the doubling on this posted Morgan at AMERICA is strike or die ? I will confirm it be it either, and guess I ask more to see what level of awareness is attainable & exists, believing I to can strive for the same. Thanks & I mean that really.

VamWorld has a TON of information. With a little looking around you should be able to attribute it by yourself...Good Luck. If you are having issues ask some of the guys on VW...they/we are all more than happy to lend a helping hand. Great bunch of people!!!
