So I happen to have a ngc graded coin in ms 62. The coin has a small scratch on the observe. My question is, can the scratch on the coin become larger and more apparent as time passes or absolutely not?
Did you realize the scratch when you bought the coin? It can't get larger while its encapsulated, though 2 ideas are: You didn't see the scratch at first and now your attention is drawn to it. The scratch may be starting to tone and it looks to be growing
It can not get larger on its own. It is possible that it appears larger due to difference in toning. Fresh metal surface tone differently than original metal surfaces which have a thin patina surface, And as Coinjester says it looks to be growing. But the most likely is the Psychology of "sight". Sight is different from vision in that it is after your brain processes the information from your eyes ( vision). Once the brain realizes that something is important or "odd", it can do the equivalence of "photo shopping" it for you. It makes it sharper, and can emphasize an object. You may not notice the hair protruding from the nostril of your lover, but once you notice it, it becomes more obvious and can even look like it is getting bigger. Jim
thanks for the input the coin is gold and you read my case regarding my psychology issue. Every time I look at it is seems to increase in my mind the coin does not have any toning by the way
I didnt notice it. Purchased this coin with a lack of prudence. Was caught up in the thrill of finding such an example for sale and immediately rushed to buy it. I ended up buying the slab not the coin. Major mistake
How bad can it be when gold went over $1900 today? If it really bothers you, then sell it when gold goes up a bit more. You'll probably make a profit with the way gold is increasing in value. Remember, if it bothers you now, it will really bother you every time you look at it later.
One of the local shops has a 1839-o bust half in xf40/45, a coin I've been searching for years. I jumped for joy when I seen it, and was about hand over the money and then "it" caught my eye rim damage arrghh. I didn't by it though every time I go by the shop I look at it and my eyes are drawn to the ding. Though it is a tough coin to locate and I want all I can see is that BIG ding which I know I would never be happy with. Once you find a flaw it seems like your eyes are drawn to it immediately.
Most MS 62's will have a problem or two that you have to get over and accept. Scratch, slight patch of hairlines, spot or hit on focal point, etc. Nothing so bad it would No Grade, but bad enough for it to Low Grade. That is why it is a 2 and not a 5 or something higher. JMO Matt
I would say no it can not get larger as it is encapsulated in a hermetically sealed holder from the TPG which should offer it some protection against getting larger.
