Two things strike me as funny,

    • The coins were right where he ripped open the roll
    • They were all together after a very random rolling process
My advice is stay away - far away.

    Thanks for sharing

not to mention, with so many contact marks, I would be surprised that you don't see any brass at all on the coins which implies post mint.

Putting coins in the flame of a stove burner for about 15 seconds will do that exact thing. This seller is clearly a fraud, accepting only a money order but note that he does not call them errors or anything of that sort. He just says they are dark and thats about it so will get away with it.

    Thanks..

I'll cook one with a torch tonite until its cherry red to see if I can reproduce the effect.

I am one of those bidders.. his prior sales and feedback comments didn't set alarms off in my head.. I actually called him and did the ol "can I bring you a check, I live close" and he gave me his address. Payment was to be at a PO box initially. Bad vibes but I have a local bringing payment to him at home. He didn't "sound" like a criminal :p

I definetly agree on the expected randomness of the roll. He said that the end coin was normal.. but when I count 15, it comes to the end of the roll IMO. That picture also shows the coins rising in the middle like they were taken out and re-inserted. One of his other auctions (the most recent one in feedback) has a one-side-blank but the picture of the reverse has different lighting and a different surface under it. smells bad.. but as I said.. I already stepped into it good.. I'm going to follow through... maybe a $100 lesson will do me good.

Let me save you the trouble of a $100 lesson from this con-seller and take my advice: retract your bid.

Do what I do...I bid on a coin I later felt was a fake but didnt want to make a big deal about it. I contacted the seller and said that my financial situation has changed and I would be unable to pay for the coin. I apologized and told him that I did not mean to cause a problem but if I win the coin I simply will end up not being able to pay and was hoping he would retract my bid...he did without a word...I moved on.

I have done this several time...I bid on a mussolini coin/medal that I starting thinking was a fake cast of an original...I told the guy and pretended I didnt know what I was bidding on...I said 'I didnt know this was not a circulation coin...could I retract my bid?'

the guy did...give it a shot unless you still think it might be legit. 100 bucks is a lot in my little world. :)

    hmm

hmmm $25.00 roll of coins ... 1 can of krylon spray paint.... sell each coin for about $150.00 hmmm thats nearly $4,000!!! I gotta get in on this action... :) just kidding of course, but gee... The scammers are having a hayday with these coins, it makes me sick... A lot of folks I have talked to in my circle are in a frenzy over these GW dollars and has sparked a new wave of collectors in my area... But after so many people get "burned" like this on a scam it will have a long term effect on coin collectors and dealers IMHO... I hope the problem isn't as wide spread as it seems to be... But then again sometimes it takes just a few bad apples to ruin the bunch.. .:(

Well I torched one.. 1-2 minutes worth of slow propane fuel. No oxygen turned on. The coin didn't glow.. I started small just to see what would happen and almost like NOS said, it turned color. More of a deep copper or brown with black-ish parts near the edge. maybe more time would make it blacker. The color does not come off.. the fuel left no residue or ash. I took pictures but they are all fuzzy. I'll take another one but here is the pic I have..

Mine does not have the total black look that his does... and mine is more shiney (I tried to rub the coating off and it shined up a bit) I'll try more heat.

Gonna call this guy again and talk some.

PS I'm not sure if I've just defaced currency.. but it's my intention to destroy this piece so it doesn't end up in someone's collection after I spend it..

Boy, those look JUST LIKE HIS. Didn't even cost you $100. Don't pay him. If you have already, ask for a refund/return or leave him negative feedback. Tell him you will explain to everyone exactly how he scammed you by leaving contact info in your negative feedback. Tell him you are going to report him to ebay. Tell him anything that will get your money back. You may have entered into an agreement to buy but you did not enter into an agreement that allows him to commit fraud.

pictures up close. 1 is in natural light. Up close I can see that there is spotty darker material scattered about.. it won't rub off. It's like the top micron of material melted and pooled, creating a spotty-web of dark random mesh. I bet this sucker would fetch 300 bucks. I think I'll stick to finding errors rather than buying them ;((

Thanks.. I owe him a money order.. have not paid. His other auctions for the same are over 150 now.. I'm sure he'll take my $100 one and re-sell it for 180.. he probably won't care but I do.. I wanna stick him if he is ripping me off.

More heat had the effect of BOILING whatever is on the surface and further turning it to little globs of crust. The coating is probably a couple dozen molecules thick It turned orange as it boiled and the flow of my gas caused the goop to push to the top of the coin and pool some. Now the coin looks a LIGHTER shade of aged copper in the middle and darker around the rim where the puuls of liquid settled. Under close inspection the dark scum flakes off a bit when rubbed hard. Probably give me cancer of something.

Theres no more natural light here, it makes the result look darker.

I bet if I used a KILN the coating would be black and even, like his picture.

    what a world..

    Yes,

It's really bad some of the junk that gets sold on eBay. Most people are honest and don't think the same way as these criminals that are only helped by ebay doing things allowing private bids for low dollar items and preventing groups like toolhaus from displaying Negative Feedbacks.

    Good Luck with this guy...

    thanks darryl..

Heres a good picture. Without a shiney one next to it its hard to tell but the copper color and the black ash are visible. Still.. it's not QUITE like his. Mine almost has a petina to it. cool. George looks a little peeved too ;P
