Can this 1882 PL be helped. Possibly graded?

Discussion in 'Coin Chat' started by James Rohleder, Mar 13, 2016.

  1. Hi. Can anyone help me determine if this 82PL morgan can be helped. It has pretty clean fields but a strange toning pattern. Center obverse is toned. And the reverse?? It has an issue in Capture_04180.JPG Capture_04181.JPG the hair over the ear. The black spots? Can they be removed with restoration? If restored, what grade do you think it would receive? Any other advise would be appreciated. Thanks in advance for your input.

Wouldn't consider it proof like, it appears to be cleaned and or has environmental damage. If you don't own it, I would steer clear unless at scrap value.

I don't think there's any chance these surfaces would be adjudicated as "original." I have the impression - especially on the reverse - of a near-catastrophic encounter with a chemical process, not "normal" toning. Quite frankly, stripping the surfaces would be the only way to hope to get the coin into a righteous slab, and I'm unsure that it's even possible to strip the surfaces. I believe this one could be a failed attempt at artificial toning, where the chemical source used to originate the toning accidentally came into direct contact with the coin.

    Or worse.

It's a shame, though; I agree that technically it looks rather nice, although slightly circulated. And since circulated, none of the "usual suspects" for stripping the surfaces would leave a gradable coin - it would be "too clean" for the wear. Unfortunately, this one has likely been destroyed by whatever created the color.
