I believe this ancient Greek coin has some pretty well significance or importance despite its condition as a mere cud. It's just a guess anyway. I need your assistance to identify the name of the leader on obverse. I also cleaned the coin and attached a third scan of the uncleaned obverse. Thank you guys.. Charles
The lettering is Greek for sure. With the magnifier and the coin at hand, I could clearly identify an animal on the reverse. Kind of a deer, horse or elephant. The coin weighs 8.94 g. I could also detect the Greek letter sigma in front of the Emperor's face. Hope that might help.. Charles
I found the letters easier to read on the 'before' photo. It first struck me as a plowing scene left and possibly Severus Alexander but the examples I found had the oxen going right. There are definitely two animals together (yoked?) with a straight figure behind (plowman?). The legend starts AVT, which starts many provincial legends, followed by a larger M or possibly a K lambda which would allow Severus Alexander, Gordian III or (if not M) Geta. None for any show the oxen going left. Beats me!
My best guess is Elagabalus, Judaea, Aelia Capitolina (Meshorer, Aelia 113). But really, this coin may be too worn to identify.
