I am not a coin expert by any means, but a family friend found this in his yard underground with a metal detector. Anyone have any ideas of what kind of coin it is? If it is worth anything?
That looks like a very worn V-Nickel. Looks that way due to Environmental Damage being buried a long time. And it has a counterstamp.
I just went through a pile of large cents, and I believe that is definitely a large cent. The font for "Liberty" is different than the font for a V nickel. In that condition, it's worth zilch! Unless you find a counterstamp collector, in which case it's worth a little more than zilch. But still - an awesome find!
Also the size - if it's around half dollar size, it's a large cent. If it's around nickel size it's a nickel.
I don't think it is a V nickel or a large cent. Very interesting find! I am looking forward to seeing what this really is.
If you look at it you can see where somebody scraped away the corrosion to reveal the copper underneath. There's no doubt it's a large cent.
What a neat and unique find. Looks like a large cent to me. I'd like to see the reverse. It's a shame someone recently scraped the edge to reveal copper. That lowered what little value there was. Nice counter stamp as well.
