Im in need of sending some items to PCGS but im not a member and I don't have a whole bunch to send, maybe 5 or 6. I'm tight on cash but I can trade you with some other coins, raw or graded or mixed 90% silver, or???
Irrelevant as PCGS will not accept submissions 'over the counter'. http://www.pcgs.com/store/t-faq.aspx#19 Contact your LCS (PCGS has a dealer search for finding them)
I went by the local shop which used to be owned by Fred Coops. Talk about stereotyping and profiling. I went in with shorts, flip flops, a hat, full sleeve tattoo on one arm, half on another, and a calf sleeve tattoo on a leg. The new owner was a jerk and looked at me as if I was poor white trash. I guess my poor money isn't as good as rich money.
Well, with 6 coins to send it, it may be cheaper to just do it yourself. $49 membership (or $149 with 4 gradings included), economy (up to 300$ per coin) is $20 per, regular is $32 (up to $1,000), modern (1965 to date) is $16
I get frustrated filling out paperwork I'm not familiar with and won't do it. Besides, I'd like to have someone assist me in choosing which coins would be best to send. I have hundreds to pick from; FT dimes, FB mercs, FS nickels, etc. What I think is great might not be as good as another variety. I'm still learning and don't want to waste precious time and money.
You could try contacting a local club that could do a referral, a Veteran's group, social worker who could help fill out the paperwork. I get calls from time to time from collectors calling around based on grading company referrals. I'm on the other coast so can't help much.
I hear you, but it's not worth their time. Effectively you are asking them to appraise your collection. It will take hours to sort through that sized collection and they will need to charge your for the time. The costs will be several hundreds of $.
Honestly you will likely have to pay them to go through them all with you. That's a decent amount of their time it would take especially for a shop you don't frequent regularly.
Ask PCGS (Collectors Universe Forum) to join their message boards. Go to the head of the horse with your bale of hay, not the tail.
That seems like a fair deal if someone if willing. Depending on the coins some dealers might take that too
I hate to say it (because the show just ended), but the Long Beach Expo would have been a great chance to have the coins looked at by a Merc specialist and then you could run the coins chosen directly over to the PCGS booth. I just went with a friend on the 9th and that is exactly what he did! Had a few Cents reviewed by Charmy Harker & some gold reviewed by the ANA President Jeff Garrett before sub-ing them directly to PCGS at the show.
