My Uncle has this old coin and he was wondering what the grading for it would be? Any help appreciated.
These little guys scare the devil out of me because they were highly counterfeited back in the day. Not that I'm an authority on these pieces (far from it) but there are some marks on the reverse that bother me. Probably nothing untoward but larger pics would sure help. From what I see from these pics though, I'm thinking XF......this coming from an amateur.
If it is genuine I would probably agree with green and say its around XF, but to help determine if its real or not we need larger pics.
I would recommend better pictures so we can look for tell tale signs of fakes. So assuming it's real... possibly xf40 IMO.
It looks XF-45 to me, but I am a bit suspect of its authenticity. The reverse looks off. Can your uncle provide an accurate weight?
need better pics guess in xf? and like was said many fakes.from those pics i think it has a good probability of being fake.
I have to agree with everyone else here. THe most important consideration with this coin is authenticity, not grade. Its valuable enough to warrant sending to TPG if your uncle ever wishes to truly maximize any price from it. Everyone here is right, too. These were counterfeited heavily. Weight won't help most of the time, either, since the Lebanese counterfeits were all done in full, correct weight gold. $3 and $1 gold coins you can never tell by weight, since collector value has always been higher than gold value, there are many full weight gold counterfeits around.
