Can someone answer my quesions about early u.s commomeratives

Hi veryone. I just had a quick question. Recently I purchased a graded 1936 oregon half dollar on ebay because of its beauty. I am thinking about starting to collect early U.S commoratives. I sort of only want to collect them if there is 1 for every state. (its wierd I know) And thus my question is is there 1 early commerative for every state? P.S Early as in pre 1982 preferbly early 20th century.

The commemoratives were supposed to celebrate some important anniversery of an historical event, but the series degenerated into a scheme to fleece collectors and was marked in some cases by outright fraud and cronyism, collectors who applied for a coin would be told the series was sold out, then lo and behold some connected dealer would just happen to have picked up a large stash of them.

The coins that were actually sold at the events tend to have been mishandled more, harshly cleaned or used as lucky pocket pieces.

 

I have a Maine commemorative that my grandfather was saving. He was a banker in Brewer, Maine and got it when he was a young teller. The book claims that it is worth $100. Do people really pay this much for these commems?

 

Olympic, World War 2, World cup, and Columbus half dollars are not part of the early comm's. You need to buy a, "Guide Book of U.S. Coins. Also known as the "red book".

 

Why does he need to buy the book? The early commemoratives were listed 4 posts above yours, already. And there is plenty of additional information available on the internet.

 

Boy, what a great collection that would be and I'm sure several members are, ll, that close to completing their's. Comm.'s cover the whole gamut of coin collecting: beatiful, ugly' large, small, heavy, light, valueable(moneywise), not so valuable, etc. I like em'.

 

Hello Fred ? :kewl:I hate to be the one telling you this,but Fred, but with the Early-Commem's they just didn't make these for every state in the union. Fred, your best bet would be, is go buy the Red Book,,,,it has both the Early and Modern Commem's in there. Also just to let you know, there's a few, that are very spendy, so take your time , an' decide how your going to collect these. Good Luck, my friend ! Chasindreams,,,,
