Could you please repost the picture with the top of the coin at the top of the picture?

I got a real crick in my neck looking at the image on the left, which seems to be Scandanavian, but I don't have my 18th Century Krause handy right now, to check it out further.

I can't tell if the date is 1718 or 1748.

Looks likes the arms of the German state of Saxony on the reverse.

Can't find it in any Scandanavian country, nor in the German State of Saxony, although somewhat stylistically similar obverses were found in Saxony, Denmark and Norway, but not in Sweden. [IMG]

What's the weight? Does it appear to be gold or well preserved copper?

Antidote - Your paintshopping skills work for me. :D

Roy,the obverse of that thing looks Danish, but the reverse looks Polish,as it has the combined Coat-of-Arms of Poland & Lithuania. It looks very brassy.I know that this is definitely NOT a coin.Perhaps,it could be a medal or token of some sort.

I was thinking the same thing, that it might be a token.

The "FR" looks like the monogram of Friedrich II (the Great) of Prussia.
It is possible that the number "17.." might be "178.".

The monogram does indeed look very much like the Prussian one, but whoever made that item didn't get it quite right. the crossbar of the `F' should be within the top of the `R', not meeting the `R' in the middle. Close, but if it's supposed to be `Prussian' then it's clearly a fake, or deliberately done that way to avoid being accused of being a fake at that time?

Aidan is right concerning the `polishness' of the reverse, which made me think that the item might have been made for South Prussia, a part of Poland which was occupied first by the Russians, and then by the Prussians (under Frederick William II). However the item does not fit any coinage I know of for South Prussia. Some kind of token perhaps?

This is a hybrid coin: Rev is taken from 1/24 thaler German (Prussia) poor silver coin - cesar Frederich der Grosse (F. the Great); obv is from Polish 1 grossus copper coin - the shield is the royal sign (called "ciolek") of the last king of Poland - Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Both coins were produced in the same time, but German coin is a little smaller.
Modern fake, probably from 60`s. This year I saw the same type twice. The price was always $0.25.
