Although the pic does not show it the dime is full band but it has this black stuff on it. Its a 1935s and other wise a real nice dime, is there anyway to remove the unsightly black whatever??? Thanks!!
It appears that at some time in the past someone has removed a great deal of the black already. But to answer your question, yes you could get it off. But I don't think you'd be happy once you did. In all likelihood the additional cleaning would only make the old cleaning even more visible. It would also accentuate that cut in the rim. The coin isn't unc either and it wouldn't qualify for Full Bands. You'd be better off in my opinion to look for a better example.
It appears that this black stuff may be a silver oxide or nitrate. What you have to do is get some battery acid and place the coin in a plastic glass, add the battery acid and let stand for one year. After that you must place the coin on a cars fender and heat the coin with a Butain torch for 1 1/2 minutes. The car to use should be someone else's car since the torch will also mess up the paint. Then place this coin in a glass of Vinegar for 6.38 minutes. This will add a salad odor to the coin. Now none of the above will remove that tarnish on the coin but will give you something to do. Now actually you should understand that the black stuff is actually a compound formed due to the exposure of the coin to the air. It is partially the Silver that made up the coin. By removing that tarnish, you will also be removing some of the coins material. Best let it alone.
