I have this coin which i believe is made of gold that is about 1/2 inch in diameter, octagonal shaped. On the front is an indian with stars around his head and they year 1881 on the bottom. On the other side is a wreath with 1/2 inside. Can anyone tell me about this coin?

    California fractional gold half dollar.

Not sure if it is genuine or not as these are often counterfeited. Hopefully, someone who knows the stuff better will advise.

I am not an expert by any means, but it doesn't look real to me. Check out this link (double click on the page when you get there and use the zoom feature):

    http://issuu.com/goldbergcoins/docs/calcat

Flip through the pages until you get to page 43 and look in the bottom right corner. I think this is what the coin should look like, but yours doesn't match. I am guessing there should be the word "DOLLAR" under the "1/2" on the coin, like in picture on page 43.

Again, I can't guarantee that it is counterfeit and I am NOT an expert, but it doesn't look right. Just my $0.02. Hope it helps!

Unfortunately that is not real, most likely a common token or counterfeit would be my guess. There are thousands of counterfeits for these California coins or tokens. Check out this website and you can see and learn. Maybe next time.
