I was going through my 'hard to identify' coins the other day and I found this one. It has a distinctive image on the reverse and I am hoping that someone who is familiar with it may be able to assist me in attributing the coin by identifying it, please? AE21 mm, 3.41 gm. Looks like a REPARATIO REIPVB reverse to me. If so, you have a few options for the obverse emperor, such as Gratian and Theodosius. Magnus Maximus is another. Others will know more. Looks like I have a small error in my own catalog, mentioning Gratian on the reverse, not Theodosius. Anyway, anecdotally, Gratian seems the most common of those three emperors to find.
Hi, Gavin, I thank you for your response. I will now research coins like this under THEODOSIUS and GRATIAN. Firstly, I will attempt to make THEODOSIUS or GRATIAN out of the legend on the obverse.
Sounds good. Quite frankly, I thought other people would respond. Either they agree with my reverse type suggestion, or they don’t have a guess. What do you think? Do you think it looks like that reverse? And don’t neglect Magnus Maximus either. I’m just not sure what I’m seeing on that obverse. I believe Valentinian II had these struck too, but without a legend break. So he is not an option.
Hi, M.M. Thanks for coming in. On closer inspection I can make out the legend "DN MAG MAXIM". Would that restrict the search to Magnus Maximus or could that still allow for another ruler?
