    The characters translate to:
    Big Japan
    Big Formal Tenth Year

    I guess "great" is a better translation for the da4 character...

    Don't feel bad -- it took me years to look at squiggly writing and make sense out of it. I bought my first all-Japanese catalog in the early 1960s.

    The era Taisho is translated as "great righteousness". A common coin. Some years are hard to find for this type.
