The second one looks like a "IOVI CONSERVATORI" Roman coin of Licinius. Licinius RIC VII Nikomedia 15 (Catalog Roman Imperial Coins, Nikomedia mint) From the Wildwinds database: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/ric/licinius_I/t.html The first?
reminds me of some phoenician coins i saw in the latest CNG auction. see esp. nos. 476 and 477. http://cngcoins.com/Coins_archive.aspx?CONTAINER_ID=554&ITEM_IS_SOLD=1 dunno about the inscriptions, though.
yeah, i'd bet my eye teeth that that's tyche on the obverse. some sort of roman provincial issue, perhaps? coinman, can you make out any of the text on either side? it's really hard to tell from the photos.
Well, on the reverse, I can make out the letters "LAVG". At least, I think that's what it says. On the obverse, on left of the head who you think is Tyche, I can see an upsidedown "V" followed by an "L".
two possibilities i found: http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...9.jpg&ruler=./greece/troas/alexandreia/i.html http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/bigp...4.jpg&ruler=./greece/troas/alexandreia/i.html i suspect that the first coin is the more likely of the two, based on the inscription reading you provided. a link to alexandria troas information (i'd never heard of the city before, so this was all new to me): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alexandria_Troas perhaps rather than tyche, the turreted gal on the obverse of the coin is the deified personification of the city? hopefully someone with more knowledge of ancients will come along to chime in. but regardless, a very coin coin. V.
Well the first one listed is almost a match. The obverse is correct, however, the reverse isn't a full match, while the inscription on the reverse is right.
http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/troas/alexandreia/SNGCop_104.1.jpg what about this guy? i'm having a hard time making out the reverse -- maybe rotate it to the right some? if the 9 o'clock in your pic is moved to the 12 position... thoughts? V.
here's a good site I found for ancients http://forumancientcoins.com/forvm/Identifying_Your_Ancient_Coin.htm
