Hello folks! I'm your average Joe who knows nothing about coins. The following coins have recently come into my possession through a friend. Does anyone have a clue what in the world these are? https://www.dropbox.com/s/v1msg56fqnry9zv/IMG_0187.JPG?dl=0 https://www.dropbox.com/s/oqwl4dc4hg159ef/IMG_0186.JPG?dl=0 If anyone can help, thank you.
Looks like a cast tourist copy of a gold 8 escudos ("piece of eight") from the Spanish colonies in the New World. These are often sold in gift shops as "pirate gold", sometimes with a card giving historical information. Worth maybe a buck or two as a trinket.
I used to have one of those given to me by my next door neighbor, along with a cast copy of a Nero tetradrachm of Alexandria. Kind of started me in the hobby of collecting old coins, though they were fakes, as it turned out.
