Hello, I am an avid coin collector but know very little about paper currency. Anyhow, my uncle has asked me to sell some notes for him and Im realizing that some might be mule notes. Im just now trying to learn about mule notes and have only found very little info on the topic. So far all Ive really found is that a mule note is distinguished by the size of the plate numbers. Some of the notes I am looking at have large plate numbers on the face of the bill with small plate numbers on the reverse of the bill. Does this make them mule notes or is there more to it than that??? Also, is there some sort of online price guide for mule notes I can take a look at??? So far Ive realized that the value is based on the plate numbers but havent found anything telling mke which plate numbers are scarer than others. Any Help would be greatly appreciated, I know next to noting on the topic. Thank You, Dan
Yes, one way to identify a mule note resulting from when the BEP changed the size of the font for plate numbers is to look for a mismatch in the size of the font for the front and back plate number. But note, this only applies to notes from the 1920's to 1930's. Today, the BEP uses two different font sizes for the back plate numbers depending on whether the note was printed in Fort Worth, or in Washington. Sorry I can't help you on values. A search of various completed auctions would probably help. You can probably do a search on just the plate number and the series date for an effective search.
Dan, Not seeing anything real rare in mules for these notes after a quick check. Full serial numbers with the series and both front and back plate numbers would give us a better idea. clembo
if you could take a quick tript o a con shop, i would by the Standard guide to small sized currency book. It lists all there is to know abotu mules, the dates, the runs, possible values... nice little book!
Ok, Ive found some info saying that there are no non mules in the 1934 $50s. So Id imagine that there are no rarities there. Anyhow, the first one is series 1934A New York, the serial is B09228029A, front plate is E10 and the back plate is 116. The second one is series 1934C Richmond, serial is E06863968A, front plate is D11, back plate is 105. But Ive also found out that there are 4 possible combinations of Micro and Macro plate numbers on the series 1934 and 1934A, $20 fed res notes. I have yet to find if any of those combinations are worth more than another. But it did find another site that says a back plate number of 204 is scarce. Does all my info so far sound about right??? And Dagger, thanks for the tip on the book. I dont live all to close to any good coin shops but I will look for the book online. Thank You for the help, it is much appreciated.
