Hello to all ! It's been awhile since I last-posted, so I wanted to stop by an' show you my latest find. I'm hoping you enjoy this... 1945-S Jefferson/MS>(?) Full-steps I'm thinking of sending this coin in, and get it slabbed? which Grading Service would benefit me the most, Pcgs or Ngc ? I've studied this with my loupe (10x17 mm) and its' right there! These steps look great! I don't see anything getting in the way! but,I know Ngc would be the toughest on grading out the Step-Area, an'Pcgs goes more for the quality of the coin. help me out here, :help!A: which one, would benefit me the most,as far as high grade + full steps? Thanks in advance,,, Enjoy the photo(s) chasindreams
I see a break in the two lowest steps between the base of the second column and the T of MONTICELLO. Perhaps it is the lighting.
Jim, It is really hard to tell about the steps from those scans. My guess on grade would be MS66 for PCGS and MS67 for NGC. Since NGC MS67s have been selling at about $150 in auction and PCGS MS66 FS have been selling at $300 in auction, I think you would be better off submitting the coin to PCGS. The chances of getting the 4th NGC MS67 5FS 1945-P out of NGC seems a little slim to me.
When it comes to FS (Full Steps) designation on Jefferson nickels, it becomes very subjective between the two premier services (PCGS/NGC) so you really can't say one way or the other until the graders have the coin in hand. We can speculate all day long and say, "Yeah, that's a lock FS" and it comes back with just a numerical grade or visa verse, "Yhat will never attain FS" and low and behold it comes back FS. Your best chance right now is NGC, they have expanded their views on the FS designation even so far as to denote 5 or 6 steps. If it comes back satisfactory, be happy, if not try PCGS...roll the dice. Happy Collecting
I would say MS 65 (weak strike) the FS designation is possible but hard to tell by the photo, see posible bridging under 3rd piller. Could be 5-5-4-5 but maybe 5FS. Never know I have some that say FS and I wonder what the graders were looking at and some that are not designated FS that I believe should be.
