I picked this up on eBay a few weeks ago and I'm wondering how rare proof mercs in doily holders are. The serial number lines up with the bar code, which I've heard is a desirable variety in a doily holder, but I know relatively little about them. The pics aren't the greatest and the coin has some original skin on it, but I am mainly trying to figure out how rare these are in Doily holders. Can anyone shed some light on the subject?
All doily slabs are scarce. Probably very scarce as a Merc proof. and possibly upgradable. But the doily may be worth more.
I paid a small premium for the coin because I've never seen one in a doily before. I'm putting together a full set of proof mercs in Old PCGS holders and I just couldn't resist.
Doily slabs are rare. Over ATS at PCGS there is a thread on doily slabs and he is keep track of them and is keep a current list of all known doily slabs. I'll see if I can find the thread and post a link to it.
Your doily slab serial number is not listed. He doesn't keep track of the grade so I don't know if any others are a proof. Here is the link and title: "Doily Holder Census, 466 listed" http://forums.collectors.com/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=751318
Interesting. He lists proofs for other coins in a separate category (eg Lincolns and proof Lincolns) so I'm inclined to believe there aren't any proof mercs listed yet. Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the link! I might have to see about getting my coin added to the census... Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk
