Question about CSN. I enjoy watching Coin Country and will also watch CSN as a joke but I have a question about the show. After the host shows way over priced coins they (he) will go to a price list that is supposed to be from a leading numismatic catalog and show a price that makes me choke up in laughter. Now if this was a real company they would want to actually sell coins so their price should be in line with the market. What is the company or is this just a fake list? Has anybody ever thought the same thing that I am wondering about? For sure CSN only sells coins to the uninformed not collectors who know the market.

I have wondered what other companies these are. It seems to me that they must be fantasy prices.

well, I have seen one of these catalogs once. Kinda like spotting Bigfoot. You only see it briefly, then it's gone and you ask yourself if it really happened.

seriously, though, my Mom had one of these catalogs about 10 years ago and I was not just shocked but utterly stunned by the chutzpah of these people to ask the prices that they were asking.

I personally think that someone at CSN gets paid a bonus for bringing in the catalog with the highest prices so that they can then quote "the leading numismatic catalog" when they are overcharging people for their wares. but the fact is, that if they say that someone is charging x dollars, chances are that they found someone who is. They don't even have to be selling any, just charging that amount.

I wonder if it could be Littleton's catalog. Their prices are through the roof.

Same with the gemstones on these channels. Fantasy figures! The gemstone forums have so many coming on wanting to know how to sell the great deals they got on TV. Hard to tell them they got taken. Many fall for the personalities presenting the deals and think of them as "friends" who would not cheat them.
Hmmmm, sounds like wall street fund managers.

I do believe that the catalogues that they use are the ones that you find on airlines.

Have you ever checked those out?

Ummm. That's actually a pretty good price (if you collect Kennedy's)

    1. Those Kennedys were not released for general circulation.
    2. If they are "BU" then that is a fair price.
    3. To get all 7 of them shipped to your door for $9.95 is an ok deal - once again, assuming you want Kennedys.

The mintages on all those dates are way lower than the regular issue ones (pre-2002). Some people speculate that these will go up in value. I won't get into that argument.

But, at $9.95, this is not a "shoot the moon" price - pretty decent actually.

They may also be quoting the red book. I usually keep a 10-year version around because it typically provides the right price. I'm not sure where they get their prices but it certainly isn't the market. I always check on ebay to figure out the market value of a coin. It is often 50% less than the red book.

What I hate is that Morgan Silver Dollar Ad National Collector's Mint keeps airing from time to time. The one where they "release" 3,400+ Morgan Silver Dollars, the "Last of the Morgans."

It's been like 3 or so years since they first had that ad, can't they get nicked for misleading advertising?

Just to clarify about what grinds my axe. For instance say CSN is showing Franklin halves. Mike or Sean will hold up an ad with pertinent information blacked out. Hey ! look here - all Franklin halves - cheapest price $18.75. We are only charging $ Bla Bla. $18.75 !! Give me a break. Anybody can buy these as junk silver for no more than $5.00 ea. Same story for the rare 1921 Morgans etc. Now I read Coin World - Coinage etc and have never seen prices like these. No doubt the hosts look far and wide to find catalogs like this. Its to bad they feel that they have to rip off the public like this.:headbang: Thanks. Gallienus267

While watching one of these shows they held up the catalogue to show a price and you can see the Littleton Coin Co name on it. You'd have to really need a specific date badly to pay their hyper-retail prices. Their buy prices are usually higher when they are looking for specific material however.

No because they are telling the truth. Those 3,700 whatever Morgans ARE some of the last remaining Morgan dollars. Every silver dollar that still exists is one of the last remaining Morgan dollars. They definitely aren't part of the Morgans that were melted down and DON'T remain anymore. I've listened carefully to those commercials and they don't say anything on them that isn't true.

Maybe technically. But for anyone who doesn't know their coins, they certainly sound ALOT rarer than they really are.

But on those kind of grounds you can say the same thing about almost all advertising. The whole point is to try and get you to buy by making it sound better than it really is or at least better than the competitors product. A nearby car dealership here advertises that they will pay off whatever you owe on your trade-in no matter how much it is! It isn't until you look in the fine print that you find out that the amount they paid off will be added to the finance amount on your new purchase.

yeah, by that logic I can sue pretty much every eating establishment in the world since the food they show in the commercial is not near as delicious looking as the pictures in the adverts :) I saw a steak sandwich being advertized by a sandwich shop and thought 'that looks great!!!' I go there and order one, its this greasy, slimy pile of questionable beef that resembled puke...I felt robbed :)

And technically, any coin not being minted anymore is one of the last..its the thin line one walks in marketing.
