Dan Clark was a dealer who bought thousands of lousy Byzantine copper coins and sorted through them. He developed a classification scheme that allowed him to find Sear ID numbers rapidly. He self-published this book:

Clark, C. Daniel. Speedy Identification of Early Denominationally-Marked Byzantine Bronzes
If you see poorly preserved Byzantine bronzes (491-886 AD), he wrote the book to help you identify them and tell you the corresponding Sear number. It is not a catalog, but a classification scheme in which the most visible parts are used first. For instance, if it is the "M" denomination with a star to the left and cross to the right, the possibilities are listed according to the remaining distinguishing features. Varieties are often listed more than once along different threads you might follow.
Dan bought and sold many thousands of Byzantine coins and developed this classification method and finally put it in book form in 1990. It is on very heavy card pages that lie flat in a spiral binding. 8 1/2" by 6", and 3/4" thick. You can keep it open flat while you are studying the coin. It is 130 pages with a few coin images per page
I see two used copies are on Amazon for $45. Vcoins and ABE have none. I think so few copies are available that you probably have not seen it and so didn't know if you want it. Finally, they are available again for a while, from me.
My price was $29 new + $4 media-mail shipping in the US, which made it affordable to anyone with an interest in Byzantine coins. Nevertheless, I have some remaining copies and have decided to put it on huge sale and ask only [$12 + 4 in the US].
