Over the past month or so I have a dramatic increase in counterfeit common date Morgan dollars coming in the door for sale. People are getting crafty and mixing them in with hand fulls of real dollars.

I think as times get tougher and people get more desperate. We are going to see this counterfeit problem getting worse.

I would recommend brushing up on your counterfeit detection skills. I know of some dealers who are getting caught with this stuff in their cases.

    Just a friendly warning!

Thanks for the heads up Matt. At the last Long Beach show I attended the ANA counterfeit detection seminar, and although it was really informative, they didn't bring any Chinese counterfeit Morgans with them. Mostly altered mint mark Key date coins.
I have thought about buying some of the fakes on ebay to study, but as a seller the last thing I want in my purchase history is a bunch of fake coins.:D People might get the wrong idea.

Buy fake coins after asking the seller not to leave feedback.

Or am i wrong and there is another place where purchase history can be checked in addition to feedbacks page?

Not really sure, I haven't really checked into it. That may be a good idea on the feedback, but I would still worry. Private listings in peoples feedback always makes me a bit leery as well.

This is a much quicker and easier way to see an ebay users feedback. It;s the same informaiton as their feedback page, but it's more convenient.

Have your wife buy them on her ebay account. FWIW, I think there's better counterfeit Morgans out there than will be found on ebay. The ones I've seen on there don't look as high of quality as pics from other sites discussing them.

And the best way is to have a handful of fake Morgans of varying quality in your hand to compare with genuine examples. But bigjpst has a point about counterfeit purchases showing up in your feedback comments. The last thing you want (as a seller) is to have prospective buyers reading that you have purchased counterfeit coins in the past. I think ziggy's comment about creating a seperate buying account is a good one.. I've seen it done quite often with certain buyers/sellers that I deal with.

Thanks for the heads-up on the fake Morgans becoming more prevalent at dealers shops and the like.. I do worry when buying at times and hopefully, I manage to always get real ones...
